The Ultimate Cold Water Tank & Legionella Remedial Work Glossary

  • Calorifier
A water heater that indirectly heats water through a coil or heat exchanger. Legionella bacteria can thrive in calorifiers if temperatures are not properly maintained.
  • Cathodic Protection
A method used to prevent corrosion in water tanks and pipes by using sacrificial anodes or impressed current systems.
  • Chemical Dosing
The controlled addition of chemicals such as disinfectants, corrosion inhibitors, or pH stabilisers into water systems to maintain water quality.
  • Chlorination
A water disinfection process that uses chlorine to kill microbial activity within the water storage and distribution system.
  • Chlorine Residual
The amount of chlorine remaining in treated water after initial disinfection, ensuring continued protection against bacteria.
  • Cistern
A water storage container used for potable and non-potable water supply. Regular cleaning prevents bacterial growth and sediment build up.
  • Cistern Liner
A protective coating or liner inside a water storage cistern that prevents leaks and reduces the risk of contamination from corrosion or biofilm formation.
  • Cold Water Storage Tank
A tank that stores cold water before distribution. Proper maintenance and temperature control are crucial to prevent stagnation and Legionella growth.
  • Conductivity
A measure of water’s ability to conduct electricity, often used to indicate levels of dissolved salts and potential contamination.
  • Cooling Tower
A mechanical structure that removes excess heat from water in industrial and HVAC systems. Poorly maintained cooling towers can be a major source of Legionella outbreaks.
  • Cooling Water Treatment
The process of treating water in cooling towers and industrial cooling systems to prevent microbial growth, scale formation, and corrosion, ensuring efficient operation and Legionella control.
  • Corrosion Inhibitor
A chemical added to water systems to slow down or prevent rust and scale formation in pipes and tanks.
  • Cross-Connection
A point where a potable water supply meets a non-potable source, posing a contamination risk. Backflow preventers help protect against this hazard.
  • Cryptosporidium
A chlorine-resistant protozoan parasite that can cause waterborne illness. Filtration and ultraviolet disinfection are effective methods for its removal.
  • CWST (Cold Water Storage Tank)
A common abbreviation for a cold water storage tank, which holds potable or non-potable water for distribution.
