Mains Conversion

Titan Mechanical Services is a leading service provider in the water treatment industry, offering a comprehensive range of remedial works services associated with mains conversions.

A mains conversion is often used to resolve water hygiene related compliance issues. For instance, when a Legionella risk assessment flags up a cold-water storage tank for refurbishment or replacement, a mains conversion is increasingly seen as the preferred option due to its relatively low cost and the risk reduction benefits associated with Legionella control.

Additionally, a mains conversion is also used to resolve low pressure issues in hot water systems that are being supplied from an older cylinder or water heater.

What is a mains conversion?

To put it simply, a water mains conversion is the removal of a cold-water storage tank from the distribution system. This leaves the mains to feed the other critical assets directly. Pressure Reducing Valves - also known as RPV's - are then installed on the cold-water feed to both hot and cold distribution systems. Often, this is combined with the installation of a new unvented hot water cylinder or water heater.

Why convert?

A water mains conversion for hot and cold-water supplies has a number of benefits and often delivers a much better performance.

Efficient and Effective - Once converted, the flow of hot water will be similar pressure to the cold-water supply and you'll be able to have multiple taps, showers, washing machines, dishwashers and more running at the same time without noticing a difference in the flow.

Compliance - By removing the unnecessary storage of cold water from the system, you significantly reduce the risks of Legionella proliferation, and that of other waterborne organisms.

Quantity - Old hot water cylinders usually hold smaller amounts of water and at a lower pressure. Modern hot water cylinders typically hold much more fluid at high pressure.

Minimise Space - A water mains conversion reduces the need for large storage tanks, which can take up lots of valuable loft space.

Less equipment - There's no need for booster pumps to generate high pressure.

Why not consider moving to a mains pressure hot water system today and begin enjoying the benefits of a strong, consistent flow of hot water while avoiding any nasty changes in temperature when someone else turns the hot tap on...

Why do I have stored water in the first place?

Cold water is usually only stored in circumstances where:

  1. The mains supply doesn't meet the needs of the building during peak periods
  2. The building would be compromised by disruption to the water supply
  3. The installed hot water service requires a low-pressure cold-water supply to function
  4. The main pressures can't be managed above a certain height

However, it's not unusual for cold water storage tanks to be removed and outlets fed directly from the mains. Typically, where buildings are over 20 years old and where original cold-water storage tanks are in bad condition, it is often cheaper and easier to make these systems redundant and begin the process of switching them to the mains.

How do I know if there is low pressure?

The easiest way to determine whether you have low or unequal pressure in your water flow is to look at the hot water cylinder. Typically, if your water cylinder and heating system are more than 20 years old, it's likely that they will be the cause of your low-pressure issue.
